Samsung's LED color and light engine
The revolutionary new LED system available on Samsung DLP HDTVs offers better color, and energy efficiency.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) for modern color realization
Samsung’s new LED light engine replaces the arc lamp & color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs, and realizes beautiful color. LED will last the life of the TV. Samsung LED DLP TVs eliminate the need to replace the consumable lamps every few years, and thus have less impact on the environment and on one’s wallet. Samsung’s LED light engine makes possible an Ultra-Wide Color Gamut that exceeds the NTSC defined color space spec for richer color than you’ve seen before on TV. Samsung DLP HDTVs with an LED engine are more energy efficient than similar sized flat panel displays, and the lack of a moving color whell in the design means they perform with less noise than any previous DLP HDTV design.

Samsung Cinema Smooth light engine
Samsung’s Cinema Smooth light engine create’s images with a smoother, more film-like appearance.

Cinema Smooth Light Engine
Samsung is the worldwide leader in creating light engines that harness DLP HDTV technology from Texas Instruments. Samsung’s Cinema Smooth light engine brings together the right optics, electronic circuitry and replaceable light source to create a brilliant picture that’s more lifelike and much closer to film. Now in its sixth year of evolution, Samsung’s Cinema Smooth light engine delivers crisp, 1080p High Definition resolution with high contrast and brightness, defined edges and sharp detail.

Next Generation DLP Chips from Texas Instruments
Samsung employs a Texas Instruments DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors. The DLP chip is faster than any other HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on & off 15,000 times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast moving images. When combined with Samsung’s new Cinema Smooth light engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that’s closer to film.

Samsung Cinema Smooth light engine
SRS TruSurround offers a surround sound experience from only two speakers.

SRS TruSurround Samsung HDTVs are equipped with the best that technology can offer in sound quality. Even when viewing regular broadcasts, Samsung’s two speaker surround sound makes you feel as if the theater has been brought to your living room.

“Samsung 61″ tv” 2010-08-04
By JR
This tv is great. I’ve had it for quite some time now, over a year or so. The picture quality is still great and the sound is quite good. Looks awesome with the HDMI and gaming.

“Only lasted 2 1/2 years” 2010-01-15
By Newt (Galveston, TX USA)
After 2 1/2 years the light display engine went out and will cost $1200 to fix.
This is horrible, and I will never buy another Samsung product.

“3 years and still great as ever” 2009-12-02
By Amazon Addict (Austin, TX)
I have had this TV for 2 years now. Purchased November 8, 2007. I love it.. Picture quality is awesome and playing games on it is a treat. There is no “rainbow effect” that you hear about on DLP TV’s and no bulbs to replace.. I hope it lasts forever.

****** Update 10/20/2010 ************

Well my time with this TV is about to come to an end as I am getting a 65″ Plasma to replace it. I am selling this TV to a friend and it is still a great TV and I wouldn’t be selling it to a friend if I didn’t think so.

“3 years and going strong” 2009-09-26
By M. Hoyt (McCordsville, IN USA)
I have had the Samsung 6187 for three years. The bulb is till good and the picture quality is excellent. I have had a problem with the Television shutting off with an error message Check Fan Light #2. This has happened twice. If you are computer savvy, this is the fun part. The inside is very similar to a computer and quite easy to replace parts yourself if needed. When the Fan #2 error message comes on, basically the fan needs to be cleaned. Take off all the screws on the back cover and each of the components inside basically plug into each other. The fan in on the right side, rear. I just take a slightly damp cloth and wipe up the dust that builds up in the fan and put it back together. You can do it by just taking off the back and using your finger with a cloth and it may work, but it would be difficult to clean behind the fan without taking the three screws off the plastic housing. The great thing about DLP is when the lamp eventually goes out, you can replace the bulb. An LCD or Plasma has a half life and eventually will go darker, but not the DLP. I give it four stars because it is at least three years old and is quality older technology.

“Beware of Samsung – awful customer service” 2009-06-02
By D. Kennedy (NY Suburbs)
I purchased my HLT6187 in mid 2008. A few weeks ago, the sound and picture disappeared. Samsung sent a contracted repair servce twice to replace the LED engine, BOTH times it blew again within 24 hours and I called them back (should mention here that their hold times are ridiculous, and twice when I was transferred to their ‘executive customer care’ line, the phone rang for up to 10 mintes non-stop before I hung up and dialed again). Samsung then contacted the service people, determined that it was not reparable, and offered an exchange. I was offered a 52″ LCD that sells for $300 less than my 6187 did, as Samsung does not make DLP TVs any longer and they were taking unit depreciation into account. Quite frankly, their accounting issues should not be my concern, as their TV stopped working *under warranty*. I said I would not accept their exchange, as I purchased furniture and arranged a room around a 61″ screen. I told the rep on their ‘executive’ help line that I would consider (begrudgingly) accepting a 55″ LCD unit, she said she would relate that to the exchange department. They came back with the snarky reply that sure, they would exchange for a 55″ unit, for a $750 fee. I was pretty ticked off. I said I wanted a refund then, and the rep said they would begin processing it, but it would take up to 3 weeks to send someone to take back the television.
In short, my advice is to AVOID SAMSUNG as their customer service is the worst I have experienced with a large company. I will never buy another Samsung product again.
